AHCCCS and GLP-1 Medications: A Covered Pathway Through Liver Health

AHCCCS doesn't cover GLP-1s for weight loss alone. But Wegovy is FDA-approved to treat MASH, a liver condition that is common in people with obesity, and AHCCCS covers medically necessary treatment. A simple blood test tells us whether this pathway applies to you.

How Coverage Works

Why AHCCCS Covers GLP-1s for Some Members

Coverage here is based on a medical diagnosis, not on weight loss. Each case must be genuinely clinically indicated, which is why everything starts with screening, not with a prescription.

A real, common condition

MASH is a progressive liver disease that is common in people living with obesity and metabolic conditions, and it usually has no symptoms until it is advanced.

An FDA-approved treatment

In 2025, the FDA approved Wegovy for noncirrhotic MASH with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis, taken alongside diet and physical activity. That approval is the basis for AHCCCS coverage.

A simple first step

Screening starts with a FIB-4 score from a routine blood draw. No scans, no specialist referral, no cost surprises before you know whether the pathway applies.

Handled start to finish

If your results point to MASH-related fibrosis, we complete the workup, document the diagnosis correctly, and submit the prior authorization to AHCCCS for you.

Step One

The FIB-4 Blood Test

The FIB-4 is a score calculated from a routine blood draw, using your age, two liver enzymes, and your platelet count. It flags possible moderate to advanced liver scarring (fibrosis).

If your FIB-4 is elevated, we complete the evaluation for MASH-related fibrosis. When the diagnosis is confirmed, we document it correctly and pursue the covered, medically necessary treatment pathway with AHCCCS.

If your FIB-4 is normal, this pathway isn't appropriate for you, and we will say so plainly. Most patients in that situation look at our cash program at about $200-$225 a month.

If You Qualify

What Treatment Looks Like

The FDA approval requires Wegovy for MASH to be taken alongside diet and physical activity support. That support is built into our program, and with AHCCCS coverage there is no program fee. The Loli app even has a free version you can start with today.

Common Questions

AHCCCS GLP-1 Coverage FAQs

Does AHCCCS cover Wegovy or Ozempic for weight loss?
Not for weight loss alone. AHCCCS, like most state Medicaid programs, excludes GLP-1 medications when prescribed only for weight management. However, AHCCCS does cover medications for accepted medical conditions, and Wegovy is FDA-approved to treat MASH, a metabolic liver disease, in patients with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis.
What is MASH, or fatty liver disease?
MASH (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis) is a progressive form of fatty liver disease in which fat buildup inflames and scars the liver. It is common in people living with obesity and metabolic conditions, and it often has no symptoms until the scarring is advanced, which is exactly why screening matters.
What is a FIB-4 test?
FIB-4 is a score calculated from a routine blood draw, using your age, liver enzymes, and platelet count. It flags possible moderate to advanced liver fibrosis. It is the simple, inexpensive first step that tells us whether further evaluation for the covered MASH pathway makes sense for you.
How do I find out if I qualify?
Book a visit, by telehealth from anywhere in Arizona or in person in Tucson. We order the FIB-4 blood test, review your results, and if they point toward MASH-related fibrosis, we complete the diagnostic workup and submit the prior authorization to AHCCCS for you.
What if I don't qualify through my liver health?
Then this pathway honestly isn't for you, and we will tell you that directly. Many patients in that situation choose our cash program: FDA-approved GLP-1 therapy with a full medical team for about $200-$225 a month, all-in.
Is there a program fee with AHCCCS?
No. When AHCCCS covers your medication through this pathway, the program is included at no additional fee: individual dietitian appointments, health coaching, and the Loli app.
