Insurance Coverage for GLP-1 Medications

GLP-1 medications are transforming weight loss, but navigating insurance coverage can be overwhelming. Our dedicated insurance specialists handle prior authorizations, appeals, and cost-saving strategies so you can focus on your health.

The Reality

Insurance Coverage Is Improving - But Still Inconsistent

Coverage varies dramatically by plan

Some plans cover GLP-1 medications with minimal copays, while others exclude weight loss medications entirely. Even within the same insurer, coverage can differ between employer groups.

Prior authorization is almost always required

Insurance companies require extensive documentation before approving GLP-1 medications. Incomplete submissions are the number one reason for denials - and most practices don't have the staff to navigate this process effectively.

Retail pricing is prohibitive

Without insurance, GLP-1 medications can cost $800-$1,500 per month. That's why having a team that knows how to maximize your coverage - or find creative alternatives - makes all the difference.

Medicare GLP-1 Bridge

Medicare Has a New $50/Month GLP-1 Coverage Path

Starting July 1, 2026, eligible patients with Medicare Part D or Medicare Advantage drug coverage may qualify for Wegovy or Zepbound through the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program. The program uses a flat $50 monthly medication copay with no deductible to meet first.

This is a separate pathway from commercial insurance. We confirm eligibility, explain the program fee and visit copays, and handle the prior authorization paperwork.

How to Check Whether Your Plan Covers Wegovy or Zepbound

Five steps if you want to investigate on your own. Or skip straight to step five and we'll do all of it for you.

  1. 1

    Find your pharmacy benefits number

It's on the back of your insurance card, usually labeled Pharmacy, Rx, or Member Services.

  2. 2

    Search your plan's formulary

Look up "Wegovy" and "Zepbound" in your plan's drug list on your insurer's website.

  3. 3

    Ask the four key questions

Covered for weight management? What tier? Prior authorization or step therapy required? Copay before and after deductible?

  4. 4

    Use the manufacturer coverage tools

NovoCare's Wegovy coverage checker and Lilly's Zepbound coverage pages estimate your plan's coverage in a few minutes.

  5. 5

    Send us the details

We run the complete benefits check, submit the prior authorization, and appeal any denial. This step is free.

Common Questions

GLP-1 Insurance Coverage FAQs

Does insurance cover GLP-1 medications for weight loss?
Many insurance plans now cover GLP-1 medications when prescribed for weight management. Coverage varies significantly by plan - some cover brand-name medications like Wegovy and Zepbound, while others only cover them under diabetes benefits. Our insurance specialists review your specific plan and identify the best path to coverage.
What if my insurance denies coverage for GLP-1 medications?
A denial is not the end of the road. Our team files appeals with detailed medical documentation, peer-to-peer reviews, and supporting clinical evidence. We also explore alternative coverage paths including manufacturer savings programs, creative dosing strategies, and pharmacy options that can dramatically reduce your out-of-pocket cost.
How much do GLP-1 medications cost without insurance?
Without insurance, GLP-1 medications can cost $800-$1,500 per month at retail pricing. However, our team uses multiple strategies to reduce costs. Manufacturer coupons, creative dosing approaches, and alternative pharmacy options can sometimes bring costs down significantly. We work with every patient to find the most affordable path.
What does your program cost with commercial insurance?
Your medication cost is your plan's prescription copay when covered. Our program fee depends on network status: if we are in network with your insurance, it is $99 every 3 months plus standard visit copays. If we are out of network with your insurance company (for example, Aetna or Cigna), it is $75 a month and includes all provider visits, the Loli app, and individual dietitian care, with no visit copays.
Does Medicare cover GLP-1 weight loss medications?
Yes, this is brand new. Starting July 1, 2026, Medicare covers GLP-1 medications for weight loss through the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program. Eligible Part D beneficiaries pay a flat $50 monthly copay with no deductible. The program runs through December 31, 2027. We confirm your eligibility and handle the prior authorization; see our Medicare GLP-1 coverage page for the full details.
What documentation does my insurance company need for prior authorization?
Insurers typically require documentation of BMI, previous weight loss attempts, comorbid conditions (like diabetes, sleep apnea, or hypertension), and a letter of medical necessity from your physician. Our team prepares all of this documentation and submits it on your behalf.
How long does the prior authorization process take?
Most prior authorizations are processed within 5-14 business days. If an appeal is needed, that can add another 2-4 weeks. Our team monitors every submission and follows up proactively to minimize delays. We keep you informed at every step.
